Black
Horror Stories

Black Rorem centers around my re-imagination of the Black character in the horror genre. Black Characters in all forms of media have been bastardized, misrepresented, or not represented at all. Black Rorem writes a new narrative for Black characters in horror to have purpose and meaning in a story. Instead of being used to be disposable or comedic reliefs, Rorem re-imagines them as the fleshed protagonist.

The body of work consists of three six foot charcoal illustrations that display Black models depicting classic horror film aesthetics and motifs. Alongside the drawings are a collection of digital photo prints. These prints depict a new world of horror that centers Black stories by emphasizing symbolic items that are relevant of Black culture.

I take much of my creative direction from curiosity and experimentation. My love for horror has continuously developed over the years, and one thing that has not made much change is the representation of Black characters in the genre.

On the 6th, do not just be a witness but be a part of creating the new narratives for Black characters in horror. Immerse yourself, and dip inside your own curiosities and interact with whatever comes out.
